Exploring the East

Of London that is.

Duck and Waffle

Heron Tower close to Liverpool Street Station is the home of Sushi Samba, a cousin of a mix of Brazilian, Japanese and Peruvian culture and cuisine and Duck and Waffle, British and European cuisine, which is open for 24 hours. I went for breakfast at Duck and Waffle a few weeks to celebrate my aunt’s birthday. When my family comes from abroad, I always want to take them somewhere they weren’t before, something that can be very British and with an amazing view of London. Duck and Waffle is your place.

Although the sky was cloudy, when we arrived, we saw London wake up on that Saturday morning. We caught up on what is going on in each other’s lives, laughed hysterically, indulged in comfort food and absorbed the charming views.

Their most iconic dish, the Duck and Waffle. My favourite, even though it may look and sound very curious, it is in fact delicious and genius. Another favourite, which I made everyone try unwillingly, were the dates covered in bacon. Yes, another strange dish, but divine.

A few weeks after, I started a course at the Istituto Marangoni, just down the road from the Spitalfield’s market, which only meant that during my lunch break, I would take full use to the many food stalls and restaurants in the market, trying a new place everyday. Here are a few places I would definitely recommend in Spitalfields Market.

Columbia Road Flower Market

On Sundays, Columbia Road is buzzing. From 8am-2pm visitors can enjoy the flower market and browse the stores on the street and the surrounding area that is only open on that day. The 52 stalls and surrounding shops sell everything to cater for that gardening English obsession. We picked up a few flowers, have some breakfast and continued to the local boutiques.

East London used to have a bad reputation years ago, but recently it has been attracting tourists and more importantly Londoners from all over the city. The up-coming area is filled with quirky boutiques, with up-market restaurants and bars and student friendly night clubs. There is something for everyone in this part of town, so I definitely recommend venturing to this part of London on a weekend.
