Milan Part 2

The second time I visited Milan, I stayed with my friend Clara, who is founder of Gourmode. ‘A chic girl with a huge appetite’ I knew that spending a weekend with her, I was in for an adventure around Milan. We had a whole weekend of planed things to do, including dinner in a shop window, sample sales and spending the day at the Expo.

“La cucina è di per se scienza sta al cuoco farla divente arte.

La camicia è di per se tessuta, sta a noi farla divenire moda.”

“The kitchen is science when the cook creats art.

The shirt is woven in itself, it is for us to make it become fashionable.”

The contemporary concept store, Cattina Spazio Comtemporaneo, in the Brera area of Milan hosted dinner for the most influential food and style bloggers in Milan. Arriving directly from the train station, everyone had taken their seats in the three tables in the shop windows to a sit down meal. The concept of eating in a shop window, combines the idea of enjoying quality food in a fashionable and stylish environment; very modern, original and very Milan.

The evening led to another fashionable gathering, of what could only be all the models and socialites of Milan seen in one club, La Divina. The night was hosted by Punks Wear Prada, which the attendees and hosts really lived up to the name.

10 Corso Como

Galleria Carla Sozzani – World Press Photo Exhibition.

The concept store was set up in the 1990s, which influenced many others to open around the world such as Colette in Paris and Dover Street Market in London and Opening Ceremony in the US. Throughout the years, 10 Corso Como has been credited for its unique mix of art, fashion, one-of-a kind home ware and accessories. Spread out over two floors and a roof terrace, it holds a three-room hotel and a restaurant.

Cala Sozzani, the older sister of current Vogue Italia’s editor-in-chief Franca Sozzani has always been passionate about photography, which developed when she was a magazine editor. She collected photography from New York and London, developing 10 Corso Como as a photo gallery. Photography in Italy wasn’t considered art at the time of opening, however, Carla Sozzani wanted to bring a new and fresh concept to Italy that she knew would be popular.

The current photographic exhibition in the Galleria Sozzani is the World Press Photo Exhibition. An independent non-profit organization with its office in Amsterdam, where it was founded in 1955 supports and advances high standards in photojournalism and documentary storytelling worldwide.

World Press Photo organizes the most important and prestigious award of photojournalism. Every year an independent jury of experts, chosen among renowned international personalities, is called to express itself on thousands of photos. The prizewinning pictures are presented in an exhibition touring around 100 cities in about 45 countries and visited by over two million people.

A group of young Samburu warriors touch a black rhino for the first time in their lives, at the Lewa Wildlife Conservancy, in northern Kenya. Black rhinos are almost extinct in Kenya. This young calf had been orphaned when poachers killed its mother, and was hand-raised at Lewa. Most people in Kenya never get the opportunity to see the wildlife living around them, especially at such close quarters. Attention is often given to the effect of poaching on wildlife, but there is little focus on indigenous communities, who are on the frontline in the clash between poachers and armed game wardens.

A young girl, wounded during clashes near Taksim Square in Istanbul, Turkey, on 12 March. Violence broke out between riot police and people attending the funeral procession of 15-year-old Berkin Elvan. He had been hit on the head by a teargas canister while out buying bread, during anti-government demonstrations the previous June, and died following a nine-month coma. The June protests had begun over plans to develop the city’s Gezi Park into a mosque and shopping center and has escalated into national expressions of opposition to what was seen as Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdofan’s growing authoritarianism. Elvam’s death triggered further anti-government protests across the country. Despite such opposition, Erdogan was elected as president of Turkey five months later.

Jon and Alex, a gay couple, share an intimate moment in Alex’s home, a small apartment in St Petersburg, Russia. Life for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people is becoming increasingly difficult in Russia. Sexual minorities face legal and social discrimination, harassment and even violent hate-crime attacks from conservative religious and nationalisict groups.

A moving and thought-provoking exhibition with imagery that is unimaginable and hidden by the press, the photos were powerful and sentimental, an absolute valuable visit.

EXPO 2015 “Feeding the Planet, Energy for Life”

Living in Italy at the time of the Universal Exposition, I had to take the opportunity and visit it, even though no one really knows exactly what it is outside of Milan. The moto of the Expo is “Feeding the Planet, Energy for Life.” The goal of ensuring sufficient food and food security throughout the world. Visiting the Expo site and the various country pavilions, one discovers the foods, cultures, traditions and spectacular shows of each country represented; “A voyage that describes a place where cultures, traditions and flavours meet against a backdrop of outstanding architecture.” The aim is to confront the issues of agriculture, sustainable development and the struggle to combat hunger for the common good. Innovation, energy conservation, environmental protections and natural resources are the main ideas that the developers based their ideas on. Not all sites were spectacular, some slightly disappointing and there was a general lack of food tasting. Although not a massive food exposition, it would have been nice to be able to try the produce from the countries we visited after reading and experiencing about their food production. However, a worthy visit if in Italy.

Another weekend paste and only a  few more left in Italy. Milan has been one of my favourite cities here, with many things to do and see, I intend on returning soon.
